Newsletter September 2023: Women defenders contributing to peace

This 21 September 2023, we commemorate the International Day of Peace with a newsletter to recognising and paying tribute to the many women defenders in Honduras. We would like to highlight their unwavering courage and dedication in persisting in their work of defending and seeking peace. Breaking down in order to rebuild. The human rights situation in Honduras 2022

Three months after the inauguration of Xiomara Castro as the country’s first female president, this document gathers the challenges and opportunities that the Honduran state, a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council since January 2022, currently has with regards to defenders of land and territory, the LGTBI+ community, women and freedom of expression, among other issues.

In this fourth edition of the PBI Honduras Newsletter, we pay special tribute to the celebrated women human rights defenders who left us this year. In addition to the killing of Berta Cáceres, which leaves a huge void in Honduran civil society, the country has suffered the loss of historic women human rights defenders such as Gladys Lanza and Magdalena Morales.
