Land, territory & the environment

Violations of human rights and environmental degradation are particularly widespread in the context of large-scale infrastructure and extractive projects. Despite the existence of international standards and laws with the intention of protecting individuals and communities, these rights are often at the centre of conflicts when large economic interests want to exploit the natural resources they find within and beneath traditional territories. Honduras is considered to be one of the most dangerous countries in the world for people who defend the right to land, territory and the environment. For this reason, PBI Honduras accompanies defenders and communities in cases of access to ancestral land, or issues related to the recognition of land titles and bad practice, or even threats, perpetrated by private entities.

The struggle for life in Honduras

Honduras is full of natural riches: coral reefs, mountains covered in trees, clear rivers and abundant flora and fauna. However, defending these natural resources can be a high-risk activitie. According to an investigation by Global Witness, since 2010 more than 120 environmental defenders have been killed in Honduras.
